Learn To Row

Our Novice Program

(in late September)  introduces freshmen and novices to rowing on the water. We hold optional sessions to instruct participants in learning how to rig a shell, carry a shell, boar a shell and rowing technique – or to become a coxswain. Our coaches motivate and inspire our novices to accomplish great things.

Our Learn to Row program is conducted at Thompson Boat Center (TBC) in Georgetown. Specific details about time and dates based on coaches’ availability are provided during Learn to Row registration process.

Fall Rowing

As permitted by Virginia High School League (VHSL) regulation, experienced rowers may take advantage of off-season training and skills opportunity (aka “Green Day Practices”). This is not the equivalent of a Fall Rowing program, will not include regattas or more than 3 days a week practices. Information will be provided about rowing opportunities as it becomes available.

Winter Conditioning

Winter Conditioning begins in late November and runs through late February, weather permitting. As soon as the boats can get back on the water winter training concludes and Spring Racing season begins. Winter training is important, as it offers each rower the opportunity to improve their speed, agility and mental toughness. With a large number of ergs at the team's disposal, all sessions are held on-site at McLean High School.
Those who commit, put in the work and stayed focus see those benefits come to life on the water in the Spring.

Spring Break Training

The Spring Break time allows for a focused training effort and team bonding opportunity. Depending on the calendar and coaches’ availability, either the team travels to an offsite location for the week of Spring Break or two-a-day practices and team activities are scheduled locally. There is an additional cost charged to rowers to cover the associated cost of this camp – whether local or out of town.

It is a week that the team looks forward to, and although the location varies, it is a critical component of a fast, and consistent performance during the Spring Racing Season.

Spring Racing Season

As challenging as being indoors all winter can be, the absolute elation of being back of the Potomac in late February or early March (weather permitting) cannot be put into words. All the hours on the erg give way to the freedom of the water. Along with that freedom comes a rigorous training and regatta schedule that does not let up. It's important you are aware, and plan your time and scholarly demands wisely.

It is expected that rowers attended all water practices and scheduled regattas.

Summer Rowing

There is no formal McLean Crew program during the summer. Many McLean Varsity Men & Women alike row for Thompson Boat Center, Old Dominion Boat Club, or at camps in Summer. The continuity of participation provides benefits of conditioning and form and is important for rower development.
