McLean Crew Club President Sheryl Pardo writes:
Your board and coaches have been hard at work planning for the 2018-19 season over the summer. We’ve heard that many rowers have been working hard as well. All of our head coaches and our freshmen women’s coach are returning for the 2018-19 season and we’ve hired two additional coaches as well. We are continuing to look for a third coach to help on the women’s side. Our goal is to expand the team to 100 total rowers, with 50 each on the boys’ and girls’ teams.
Mark your calendars for our college rowing information night on Wednesday, Sept 26th, our car wash on Saturday, Oct 13th, our first membership meeting on Wednesday, Oct 17th and our erg workday on Saturday, Oct 27th. At our first meeting you'll meet our new coaches, hear about the regatta schedule for the year and our updated dues and volunteer requirements.

New VP for Operations: Chris Gardner
We were sad to receive Jon Brady’s resignation as the Vice President of Operations over the summer after Jon’s daughter, Clare, told him she would not be returning to the crew team. Fortunately, Chris Gardner, father of rising Sophomore rower Carolyn Gardner, failed to screen a panicked call and kindly agreed to join the board as the new VP for Operations. Chris has already been spotted on MHS fields skillfully maneuvering crew trailers with his SUV.
Returning Families - Grab Your Volunteer Spot Now!
New this year: We’ll be asking returning families who pay regular dues to step up into more substantial volunteer roles to help spread out the enormous amount of work needed to run the club. We’ll be saving the “just show up” jobs like bus chaperone and cleaning up after events for our new parents.
Five volunteer jobs need to get started as soon as possible. Please reach out to Melina Duggal at MemberAtLarge2@mcleancrew.org if you can help out in any of these roles:
- Spring Break Coordinator: Lead planning for our local spring break “camp”
- Social Media Guru: Regularly update MCC’s Facebook, Twitter & Instagram content
- Team Photographer: Document events and regattas
- Gift Card Coordinator: Collect and sell gift cards
- College Information Night Coordinator
Check here for the full list of volunteer jobs available this season.
So You Want to Row in College!
Join us on Wednesday, Sept 26th, from 7pm – 9pm in the McLean High School Cafeteria to hear college crew coaches, former college rowers and parents of college rowers talk about the process (the dos and the don’ts!) for being recruited and what it's like to actually row in college.
All rowers + their parents are welcome to attend! High school seniors only will also have the opportunity to meet with coaches from local colleges separately after the meeting to hear about their specific programs (NCAA rules prohibit recruiting younger rowers for their programs).
