Nominating Committee Report

The Nominating Committee has concluded its thorough search for board members for the 2018-2019 rowing season. The candidates consist of 6 returning board members; they represent 5 female and 7 seven male rowers, and 6 of the parents have Freshman rowers. We think it's going to be a very strong board.

As specified under the MCC By-Laws, we are submitting to the Board a list of the Nominating Committee's recommendations for a slate of candidates for election to next year's Board. Our recommendations are as follows:

  • President: Sheryl Pardo

  • Executive Vice President: Dawn Alexander

  • Vice President for Ways and Means: Dave McCarthy

  • Vice President for Operations: Jon Brady

  • Treasurer: Lisa Hilliard

  • Secretary: Gillian Medina

  • At-Large - Volunteers: Melina Duggal

  • At-Large - Rower Operations: Kate Forrer

  • Regatta Chair: Barbara Benedict

Each of these candidates has consented in writing to his or her nomination for the respective positions.

Thank you,

Kelly Telep, Kristi Raymond, and Julie Mandanas

MCC Nominating Committee

Nominations from the floor will be heard during the May 10th meeting and electronic voting will occur staring Friday 11th through Sunday 13th. This accelerated timing is required due to the Year-End Awards "Picnic" being moved up to Sunday May 20th - this serves as the membership's Annual Meeting and installation of new officers. Any questions or concerns about this process please email mcleancrewclub@gmail.com. THANK YOU to the board members stepping up to serve and those that have offered to continue to serve - and to the Nominating Committee for preparing a stellar slate of candidates.

Season Wrap-up and Post Season

Just as we get going, the season is quickly coming to an end. A few notices:

  • Anyone who competed this past weekend is expected at practice Monday, to unload and rig the boats. (This is often a weekly occurrence after regattas away from TBC)

  • Practices will continue Tuesday - Friday for any boat competing this Saturday 5/12 at VSRC Day 2/Upper Boat Championships/"States" or at Stotesbury.

  • Any students with afternoon AP Tests this week and next, who may want the full time on the test should make separate travel arrangements to TBC - and, as always, let your coach know of your timetable.

  • Those attending Stotebury - paperwork and payment are due May 11th - please do not delay Stotebuy

  • The final arrangements (bus vs. car) and cost for Nationals will be determined as soon as possible after the results of Saturday's championship. Please look the information for Nationals no later than Monday and be prepared to respond quickly.

  • Sunday May 20th 2:00 - 4:00 Crew Year-End Awards "Picnic" - look for information coming soon for this traditional event to wrap up the team's season. The calendar constraints have pushed up the ceremony, but it is closer aligned to the end of the team's regular season. Come join in fellowship and support for our hard working athletes, as the "Coaches Choice" awards are announced, letters and scholar athlete awards are presented, we send off our seniors and announce the incoming Board.

Results of VSRC Day 1 - Lower Boat Championships

McLean Crew Supporters enjoyed fantastic performances from all of our boats this past Saturday at the Virginia Scholastic Rowing Championships.

Women's Novice-8, Men's Freshmen-8 and Women's Freshmen-8 at the fastest times in the final events, racing 3 nail-biter finals:

  • Women's Novice-8: 5:41.6 over Sidwell Friends 5:43.5 (McLean exhibition)

  • Women's Freshmen-8: 5:21.1 over TC Williams 5:21.5

  • Men's Freshmen-88: 4:55.8 over TC Williams 4:57.1

Novice boys had tremendous races as well:

  • Men's Novice-8: 5:18.4 v. Robinson’s 5:17.2 and TC Williams’ 5:17.4 in the toughest of 3 qualifying heats. Did not advance to finals despite being faster than 3 of 4 qualifying crews from the other heats (5:26.1, 5:35.8, and 5:27.8 in their heats.

  • MN4: Advanced to finals with 5th fastest qualifying time (out of 16 boats) at 6:24.9 and made a strong run at an extremely competitive race, finishing 5th and putting another 11 seconds between itself and 6th place boat.

The fabulous results were due to the hard work, persistence and team work from each of our boats, especially in the face of delayed and limited water practices - tremendous effort and accomplishment.

The Women's Freshmen-8 and Men's Freshmen-8 were awarded 1st Place State Championship trophy and will accept the bid to the Scholastic Rowing Association of American National Regatta May 25th - May 26th on the Cooper River in New Jersey ("Nationals). Pull hard McLean!

Due to an series of truly unfortunate events, the Women's Novice-8 final event was officially considered an Exhibition event. Our rowers were incorrectly advised and disqualified through no vault of their own, and the referee error did not allow them to compete in the first qualifying heat. The boat was placed in the final race, but the exhibition status precluded the girls be awarded the state championship trophy, even after everyone in attendance saw McLean pull ahead to register the fastest time. The grace, professionalism and sportsmanship demonstrated by our novice rowers in the face of this devastating turn of events, is exemplary of true athletes.

We look forward to celebrate all of McLean's accomplishments on May 20th at the Year-End Awards Event.
