McLean Crew Summer Update - Fiscal Year-end, Green Days, Coaches, Save the Date

Hello McLean Crew Club Membership, Couple of quick items to update you/bring to your attention regarding Financials, Green Days, Coaches, Learn to Row lead, Alumni News and Upcoming Dates. Club Financials As we put the finishing touches on closing our books on July 31 for this fiscal year, we wanted to update you on where we land and notify the membership of one final significant expense. We are projecting that we will end the year with a $35,000 surplus. This surplus is due to increases in revenue from fundraising efforts (mulch weekend, tree sales etc.), our rental agreements with rowing clubs and the sale of several older boats. Additionally, several expense line items were less than budgeted, notably bus transportation and reduced insurance and equipment repair expenses. Thank you to the past Board and general membership for the efforts that resulted in this surplus, and to the Lisa (and Martin) Hilliard for their hard work and dedication to the treasurer task through the year! As you know, we purchased a new Resolute shell for the Women’s Team this year, making a $21,000 down payment and securing a loan for the remaining $21,000. The outgoing board and the new board agreed that it is fiscally prudent for the club to use the surplus from this year to pay off the loan on the new Resolute now. This will cut down on interest that would have been paid on the loan and will free up resources to enter into a new budget season with a clean slate. In addition, based on the membership survey and prioritization of the coaches, 2 new sets of oars will be purchased, one for each team, for a total of $8,000. After the financial books are closed for the fiscal year, they will be made available on the website, and at our first membership meeting in the fall. Green Days The coaches are working on the schedule for any “Green Day” practices late summer/fall. Please note:

  • Green Days will not be a fall rowing program, and MCC sessions should not conflict with other fall rowing programs. No more than 3 practice a week for a total of 34 days from now through winter.

  • Be ready for Green Day sessions by using the updated 2017 VHSL Physical Form when visiting doctor and remember the form needs to be turned directly in to the MHS Student Activities office - the sooner the better.

Please review the email sent on July 13th for more information. Coaches - We are excited that Coach Nate and Coach Jon will be returning to coach next season and have agreed to share the Head Coach position of the Men’s Team! They will work closely with Coach Bianca, Head Coach on the Women’s Team, to lead McLean Crew Club. We have received several great resumes in our search for a new assistant coach on the Men’s Team and will keep you updated on progress and we lock in all positions for next year. Learn to Row - We are in need of a volunteer to lead this important recruiting program to introduce new rowers to our sport. You can knock out 3 volunteer credits early in the year by managing communication with participants and coordination with coaches to over-see the Fall Learn-to-Row program. Please email Volunteer Coordinator Megan Hallam memberatlarge2@mcleancrew.org for more information or to indicate your interest. Alumni News – Meghan Wheeler, MHS Class ’12 (and Princeton ’16) has been training with the US National Team this summer at the Princeton Training Center and is in contention for a spot at the World Championships in September. Update: Aug 28th Meghan was just named to the US Senior National Team W8+ and will compete on the US National Team in the 2017 World Championships in Sarasota, Florida September 24th – October 1st. Congratulations Meghan!
